Keep Rady Creek FSR open to recreational traffic
Keep Rady Creek FSR open to recreational traffic
Why this petition matters
The Rady Creek (Foggy Day) forest service road is slated to be decommissioned in August 2021. This road accesses high value recreational terrain (hiking, biking, ATVing, dirtbiking, snowmobiling, skiing) on Silvercup ridge above Trout Lake. There has been no public consultation on the decommissioning of the road.
When questioned, the Ministry of Forests (FLNRORD) gave the following response:
As laid out in the referral letter, the Rady Forest Service Road (FSR) is being deactivated for the following reasons:
- Cooper Creek Cedar is deactivating their 2 operational road sections leading up to the start of the FSR and has already postponed works from 2020 to allow FLNRORD time for stakeholder and First Nations referral. Once their road sections have been deactivated, it would cut off access to the FSR, therefore FLNRORD needs to deactivate their responsible road BEFORE Cooper Creek Cedar does.
- Rady FSR is fully contained within a Caribou GAR area, so valuable habitat is being protected in winter by limiting motorised access up Rady by sections of full re-contour. (i.e. Snowmobiles).
- Professional Engineer has recommended full re-contour in various FSR road sections of the FSR to stabilise high risk slopes and prevent future landslides. By fully re-contouring, ATV, 4WD and snowmobile access will be cut off.
- Rady FSR does not lead to a community, rural residences or Rec Sites and Trails classified “High value rec”, therefore there is NO FUNDING available to maintain the road, only money to deactivate it as it is no longer used for industrial hauling or activity.
Please sign this petition telling the government this area is high value recreation and motorized access should be kept open.
