Trip Destination: Sierra Nevada Mountains

Sierra Nevada Mountains

Sky High (Jun 2026)

There aren't many people who have the same penchant for type 2 fun that I seem to be entertained by when I head out on an adventure. I'm not sure why exactly - who doesn't enjoy suffering for the sake of a suffering - but I always try to be careful when proposing hikes, in the hopes that I'll continue to have hiking companions into the future. Even so, I've been thoroughly impressed by the treks I've seen out of Matt @theesotericone. Every time he posts a few photos and a description of the fabulous places he ventures in the…

Sierra Redemption (Jun 2026)

There's no camp site more special than the one I visit with Dad every year in the Sierra. I've been going for a lot less time than he has - he assures me that I'm gaining in age, though we both know who the ancient one is - but we've both come to really enjoy the time we spend there each summer. It was a shock then, when we found our favorite spot inaccessible last summer! With 459 trees down over the road - some of them more than 4 feet in diameter - there was no way we could…

Solo in the Sierra (Sep 2025)

It is not often that I get to visit Dad's special little spot in the Sierra twice in one year, and I suppose that technically this year is no different, since we were foiled in our first attempt to reach camp by trees down over the road. Our attempt to clear the 96 trees we'd counted when we'd flown the drone down to camp was futile from the start, and we wondered through the rest of that trip if our days at this favorite spot were over. Then - as we were driving out - we ran into Aldo.

The End of the Sierra? (Jul 2025)

For the last eight years, I've spent a few days to a week with my Dad at his favorite camp site in the Sierra National Forest. We didn't think this year would be any different as we aligned our schedules and planned menus and hikes to favorite landmarks. And then, reality. Turning onto the road that leads to camp, we were stopped in our tracks by a number of fallen trees. This was a surprise - given that we were well into the middle of summer - but not a problem that we thought would be insurmountable. At least, not…

Early Summer in the Sierra (Jun 2024)

In what has become an enjoyable tradition, the end of June marked a few days of fun and relaxation in the Sierra with Pops. Usually, busy schedules keep us from getting up until just before Labor Day, but this year we pulled off our visit early! With perfect weather, we soaked in the sun and surroundings. Visited traditional lunch spots. And trapsed our way through blackened forests of the 2020 Creek Fire. And of course we ate well. This is a special place to my Dad, one that he's been visiting for more than 30 years. As such, I've used…

Soaring Over the Sierra (Sep  2023)

Green river. Crystal clear. For the sixth time in as many years, I'm headed to a special spot in the Sierra of eastern California to enjoy a few days of wandering, chatting, and relaxation with my Dad. Having found this place more than 30 years ago, it's now the only place he camps anymore. This year - like all the others - would be wonderful even if all we did was hang around camp and enjoy the world around us. In fact, for the last five years, that's been exactly what Pops has done, a hip hindering his ability to cover…

Lake Hopping the Eastern Sierra (Oct 2022)

The Eastern Sierra. I don't know if they are less well known, harder to get to, or I was just oblivious, but while I've driven past the majestic peaks numerous times - on my way to and from Death Valley - I've never really taken the time to explore the mountain range that boasts the tallest peak (Mt. Whitney, at 14,505 feet) in the contiguous United States. But, over the last few years - as I've ventured into the Volcanic Tablelands, and here and there within the Owens Valley - I've reveled in the rocky faces and snowy peaks. Now,…

Slowing Down in the Sierra (Jun 2022)

More than 30 years ago, my dad found what is now his only camp spot. For the last five of those, I've been lucky enough to join him at least once over the course of the summer for a few days of relaxation and soaking in of the sights, fresh air, and some staying-in-one-place rather than the usual travels of my adventures. This year - like last - was up in the air for a while. Much of the Sierra National Forest is still recovering from the Creek Fire of 2020, and there are quite a few places that are…

Aftermath (Sep 2021)

The last couple years have been tough on the forests of California. According to data from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, 2020 saw more burned acreage - 4.4 million acres - than any recorded year in history. More than 2.5 million additional acres have already burned as of September 30, 2021. Two of these fires - the 2020 Creek Fire, and the 2021 Dixie Fire - hit extremely close to my heart, the Creek Fire burning through my Dad's favorite camp site, and the Dixie Fire nearly destroying the homes of two of my Uncles (and their…

Right Back to the Owens Valley (Jan 2021)

I'd been home less than a week after Tragedies in the Tablelands, and I still had the itch to get out and see everything I'd planned before things went all wonky. Even as we'd been driving home from that trip, I was ordering a new camera and lenses, and I was already checking the weather forecast to see how long it would be until snow rendered the area impassable for the remainder of winter. The good news was that the camera equipment showed up in a few days. The bad news was that there were only a few more before…

Bridge-to-Bridge in the Middle of Nowhere (Jul 2020)

Having just completed the Nevada Backcountry Discovery Route (BDR), we now found ourselves in at the southern most tip of Nevada, quite a distance between us and home. We found ourselves there with a week to spare, having finished the trip a few days sooner than we'd originally expected. Only the timing was unplanned however, as we'd run the BDR this direction on purpose. By doing so, we hoped that we could meet up with Pops on our way home at the same spot we'd spent a few days with him just a month before. Well, as it turned out,…

Escape to the Sierra (Jun 2020)

I can safely say that trips to with Pops have now become a tradition. I suppose I could have said that after the second trip to this special place, but with a third in as many years, I hope it continues for many more. This time, for the first time, @mrs.turbodb came along - and she, like everyone else who discovers this magical place, enjoyed herself thoroughly.

Into the Sierra Wilderness (Sep 2019)

Well, it's not every day that I get to go camping with my dad, and it's not that often that I camp in the same spot for more than one night. I mean, I guess we camped in the same spot two nights in a row on the Idaho BDR when a brake caliper seized up, but that was clearly an exceptional situation! Plus, after last year's adventure - my first time experiencing one of Pops favorite spots in the Sierras - I knew this was a place that I wanted to return. Likely, for years to come. It really…
