So, you want to upgrade the braking on your 1st gen Tacoma (or 4Runner), and you're wondering which wheels will fit the larger calipers and rotors? Hopefully, over time, this page can become a comprehensive list of wheels that generally work.
What's the Issue?
The only reason this page is necessary is that some early 1st gen Tacoma's (pre-2001) shipped from the factory with 15" wheels. 3rd gen 4Runners always had 16" rims, but not all of them fit the larger calipers. Tundra's on the other hand always shipped with 16" or larger rims that obviously fit the larger Tundra 13WL calipers.
Slightly complicating the situation, many 16" rims will fit, but not all. Confusion ensues.
Wheel Fitment
Updated September 15, 2024.
The fitment of the following wheels has been confirmed by the community. I should note that Fits: Yes simply means that the larger caliper clears without a spacer. It may still be that spacers are beneficial for other reasons - like tire rub on the frame when turning. If you have a wheel that you can confirm fitment (or non-fitment) of, please let me know and I'll add it to the list.
Additionally, if you'd like to test an unlisted wheel that you already have, prior to purchasing Tundra brake parts, you can follow these instructions to print a template that will indicate fitment.

Checking 13WL Fitment Using a Printable Template
If the wheel you'd like to use with Tundra 13WL calipers is not listed on this page, you can use the instructions below to check fitment. Please report back your findings. And thanks to @mechanicjon for coming up with the templates in the first place!
- Print out the appropriate template on a sheet of 8.5"x11" paper. [13WL fitment template] [13WL w/1.25" spacer fitment template]
- Glue the template to a piece of cardboard larger than the template itself.
- Cut out the template/cardboard along the outline.
- Place the template inside the wheel, aligning it with the center bore as shown below. If the template does not touch the wheel except at the center bore, Tundra 13WL calipers should fit.

My truck came stock with the 15" rims. I have 1.5" spacers on to prevent frame rub after my lift and 33" tires using the template on the spacers on my tire would be a way to check the fit? Has anyone tested this yet? Or will they be to shallow.

You can definitely try the templates, but my suspicion is that you'll find they don't fit with 15" wheels, since they don't fit even with some 16" wheels. A better bet (the way a lot of folks go) is to buy some 16" (or 17") wheels on craigslist or marketplace, and then sell yours the same place, once you've swapped.

Thanks again for the great write up on Tundra Brake Upgrade. I finished mine and am very pleased. I also ended up installing a new master cylinder and getting a professional vacuum brake bleed. Brakes are now awesome!

Can I upgrade my brakes and continue using my '99 Tacoma's 15 " OEM wheels?
Hey Chris, No you cannot use 15" wheels with upgraded brakes - at least not with Tundra 13WL or 13WE calipers (and the associated other components).
Hope you're doing well. I just did the brake upgrade last night, bedded them in and everything. I promised I would report back with the steel wheel and whether or not it would fit after the upgrade. I am running 285/75R16 Yokohama Geolander G003 MT, and the news is mixed. The wheel clears the caliper without issue, but the tires rub on the upper control arm due to the greater-than-stock backspacing. Fortunately, I think if there was a spacer, it would most definitely work. It just hits the upper control arm, making it hard to tighten the lug nuts and get it to spin freely. A narrower tire (like 285/55R16) or stock size 31x10.5" tire would likely fit without any rubbing.

Hi Sa, I don't know if it'll clear that wheel, but if you head over to the Printable Template section, you can print the template and see if it will fit. If they do fit and you end up installing the Tundra brakes, let me know and I'll post it up with credit to you.
Edit: and, as far as I can see, there's no 16x7 version of that wheel (at least anymore on Enkel's web site. There's only a 16x8.
Just letting you know about another wheel that will fit with the 13WL Tundra brakes. The wheels I run are Method Racing and the model is the Vex design. Size is 16x8 with 4.5 backspacing. I think I may have installed the brake lines upside down, 'cause it was difficult getting my torque wrench and socket on the top caliper bolts without bending the lines out of the way. -Derek (IG @silverfoxtaco)

I finally gathered all the parts to do the TBU. I removed the s13wm caliper to the side to test fit the 13WL with rotor on without removing the brake line. (after cutting the plate).
Upon installing the wheel back on, I wasn't able to fasten the lug nut all the way since it was hitting pretty good. I believe 1/4 spacers will clear it, but I'm not a fan of spacers. I may need to find a new set of wheels so I can run it without spacers. Not a fan of grinding down anything either. Hope this helps for anyone else with the same wheels.

Looking to do the TBU on my 99 T4R Ltd. Wondering, what's the minimum clearance I can safely get away with?
The cutout had about 2-3mm or so of wiggle room the wheel bore. Depending on which side I aligned the cut-out's bore tab, my rim wall clearance ranged anywhere from 1-4 mm. The wall gap was difficult to gauge visually, but the cut-out didn't make contact on rim wall.
I'm not sure how precise the non-spacer cut-out template is or if there's an accuracy loss during printing, but I printed the template at 100% scale and cut it out right on the redline. I tested it on my winter rims (Tacoma steel six spoke, on the back it says: T 16x7J DOT TOPY 921 02 3.5). I'd attach photos but not sure how to do so on this comment thread.
At worst, is 1mm of clearance enough? If not, would you recommend shaving the wheels, getting a 0.25" or smaller spacer, or going with the 199mm calipers?
Hey Aaron, 1mm seems like pretty close tolerance; I'd be happier with 2-3mm or so. If you can send me a photo of the wheel - adventuretaco@outlook.com - that'd be great. I'm not familiar with the Tacoma steel 6-spoke, but I may just call it something else. A photo with the template in place as well would be cool.
Sent! Yah I'm not sure if it's a OG tacoma wheel, got it second hand. Looks kinda like the Tacoma 2G Steel 5-spoke rim from the table above but with 6 spokes instead of 5.

Oooh that's great to know. I just got the upgrade done recently for a big road trip and can confirm that it does indeed fit. The 6 spoke are my winter rims so don't have'em on right now, but gave the mechanic one of them and he did a fit test. He forgot to take a photo though :/
Abs seems to be working great or at least the same and no squishy break pedals! My 4 runner and roof rack was packed completely with camping gear, food, water and 5 guys! So much weight that the car looked like it was squatting down for a poo like a dog haha. Despite that brakes felt very solid through mountain passes, no more wobbling rotors at the end of a long downhill, good responsiveness, and stability. 10/10 would get again.

Here's another wheel that works. Vision 398 MANX 16x8, 4.5" backspacing (0mm offset). No spacer required and clears 13WL caliper.

Thanks for putting together the helpful write-ups. BTW I have another compatible wheel for your list - Method Trail Series Bead Grip 703. I would categorize it as a tight fit (<1/8"). I did a Tundra brake upgrade with stainless lines last night and man what a difference. The truck used to get squirrelly when jumping on the brakes hard and now it feels so much more planted, I actually feel confident when a Kia or Altima cuts me off in traffic and I have to slam on the brakes. If you're considering it, do it. Highly recommend

Enkei BRAWN rims pass the template test. These rims were supposedly a "Southeast Toyota Dealer option" on 1st Gen Tundra & Sequoia. I have photo available to post.

I believe the Enkei BRAWN chart size is wrong. Should be 16" x 7"... not 17" x 8". Not sure on backspacing.

Caleb, my son has stadiums and is trying to figure out if they'll fit. Did you figure this out?
When I was looking for a wheel/tire change for my 4Runner (previously I had the stock FJ 6-spoke), I really fell in love with the look of steelies, and figured I'd just pick up 3 more since I already had the stock spare. It turned out the spare I had was the seemingly less-common (or at least less popular) 18-hole variety of the 16x7 steelie, but I was able to scrounge up a few through pick'n'pull lots and on eBay.
I think the part number is Toyota OEM Steel Wheel 16x7, 18-hole (42601-35750)
The TBU is one of the mods I've been meaning to do for quite a while, but now I know which wheels fit!
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 4Runner spares varied by the trim level and/or perhaps was changed for the '99 and later models. Mine is a 1997 SR5 and it originally had the 16" double/split 3-spoke. What I do know is that in my search for additional steelies like the one I had, I recall coming across a few different variants, in order from most common to least:
This was just my experience though, and since there are so many factors that could possibly play into explaining why, my data might be skewed. Ultimately, I do think it had to have been tied to the factory trim level and wheels of the 4Runner, and possibly came with certain mid/late-90s Tundras as well.
Here are the photos I took to show that the 16-inch 18-hole steel wheels will not fit the 13WL calipers, using the templates provided on this page.

Evo Corse Dakar Zero 16x8 ET-20 fit the 13WL with 1.25" Spidertraxx spacers easily
Pulled the trigger on the 13WL brake upgrade and am stoked that my 16 in pro comps fit without hitting anything. used the callahan kit and no problems. The wheels are Pro CompSeries 29 @ 16x8 with 4.5" of backspacing.
