In early 2026, I visited the Easy Pickings Mine Cabin on a tour of cabins around Saline Valley. There, I found this register containing a fun history of the folks who had visited in that time, as well as some of the work that had been done to the cabin in the 7 years before I arrived. I always like to archive this sort of information, as there's no telling when it will be "borrowed" from the cabin or otherwise meet some untimely demise.
If you've been to the Easy Pickings Mine Cabin, I'd love to hear your story in the comments below.

First found this in April of this year. I can tell by the condition of the wash that I am the first one here since the flooding this summer. Seeing how many remote cabins fall apart, it's clear that someone loves this one! I am going to make breakfast (at noon), read for a bit, and then probably head to the hot springs and see what 110 degrees feels like ☺

March 19, 2020 - Finally spending the night! Drove in from the north under falling snow and falling temps at 5pm. Battery LED lights and solar panel are awesome. Did have to brush 4" of snow off the solar panel. Stove is very good. Got the place up to a balmy 75°. Easily one of the best kept cabins around (and a fairly well-kept secret!) My day began with an exploration of the Nikolaus Eureka Mine. I found it to be very worthwhile as mines go. So I am self-isolating in the desert, safe from the Coronavirus, but now exposed to the Hantavirus! The world is falling apart like it never has in my lifetime, and yet poking around the desert, the unfolding catastrophe seems very far away. Eventually (soon), I will have to face the music.
March 20, 7am - Got down to 21° outside last night. Coffee and fire in the stove is a nice way to start the day! My itinerary for this trip includes a circuitous route up over Mengal Pass, down past Warm Springs Ranch, and all the way to Ibex Springs to finish checking out the roads and mines in that area. On the way I will make one last attempt to find Peter B. Kine's secret writing ledge (as described in "These Canyons are full of Ghosts"). Might stop by the burnt out remnants of Barker Ranch to contemplate the bathroom where Charles Manson was captured hiding in the sink cabinet. And, of course as always, I will swing by Saline, the most magical place in the West! But before all that: Breakfast in the very cozy "Easy Pickings Cabin". Tata!
P.S. Any handymen (or women) so inclined:
The porch roof over the main entrance has a bad leak (right above the door), creates a dangerous sheet of ice in freezing weather.

May 2, 2020 - We are out on an adventure! The cabin is looking nice, this is so cool! So many people have been here, and yet, it is very secluded lodes like the place has been fixed up throughout the years. You definitely want to keep a look out for snakes! We went on a hike not too long ago, and there was a BABY RATTLESNAKE!!! It has been quite the adventure so far.
Pretty long drive too. And the out house is for sure cleaner than I expected! That orange radio is very interesting, and annoying. Stay creative and stay healthy! ♡♡♡

May 23rd, 2020 - Arrived at the cabin last night before sunset. Found the cabin on Google Earth, first time visiting in person. Aidan cleaned out the entire place and did an amazing job while (Kevin) took a killer nap in the jeep. Aidan built a karn east of cabin on top of cliff. Met our other friend Logan who made the drive from Seattle in one day, complete sender. Found sticks of cinnamon in the cabin and made some amazing french toast. Heading into Saline Valley to see springs (hoping they're not all shut off) and then hoping to spend the night at Nelson Cabin (another first). Feeling lucky after having both K.K. and Worldbeater to ourselves.

June 5th-7th 2020 - We stayed two nights here at this... nice cabin. This is our second time staying at the cabin, but the first time overnight. The screened-in porch wis fantastic and we enjoyed sitting in the cool breeze with a cold drink.! We took a hike down the canyon on.. one day, and a bike ride to Jackass. to another cabin (Boxcar?) flats to about 8 miles away. Great views! We were sad to see one of the cabins up the Marble Canyon burned down this past winter. That sucks! Lots of large lizards running around. We also saw bats at night. There were four baby birds huddled in a small nest in the outhouse, keeping warm. We fixed a few latches on the doors that were broken/missing. Attempted to vacuum with the Dirt Devil but the batteries didn't provide enough power, even w/a additional few solar panels we put on the roof while we stayed here. So we used the "manual" vacuum! Can't wait to return again! Very grateful that this cabin has been so well taken care of.

Sept. 2, 2020 - Addey was here - last year.
Sept. 14 2020 - 'Keeping busy until I can legally go into the Inyo Nat. Forest again. Large portions of CA and OR are plagued by smoke from numerous forest fires. It's been a crazy summer and I'm about ready for it to be over! Had Saline all to myself on Thurs and Friday. I mean zero peeps (not even Lee was there). That is a special treat, ever without soaking pools. The wizard shower was great, as was the dishwashing station. But the cold pool at palm spring was the bomb in 700° heat! So refreshing. -S.G.

Gave the fire place a run for the money... It works great and was able to get 250°-275° on the coleman stove on top of it for baking., Ciniman Rolls/Biscut's & Gravey and chocolate croissants! yum! Swept up, tried to vacuum but the Dyson. was not doing its job! It Pulls 980 Watts per HR if your interested. Cleaned the back... porch and stacked all the wood. More room now! Chopped a bunch of kindling for the next person. Cleaned under the sink. Sink drain is leaking so I put a 5 GAL bucket under it. Will empty when I leave. 409ed everything I could. Left a coin. We will all be gone one day, but this cabin has proved it's not going anywhere! Thank's to Mr Maurer leaving us all this legacy, we get the chance to take care of this cabin and Pay It Forward.

MAY 3, 2023 - (39° IN AM, BREEZY)
NO TRACKS SINCE LAST WASHOUT WE SLEPT OUT IN CAR-TOP TEINT BUT OUR DOG DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE WARM COZY CONFINES OF THIS CABIN. WOOD STOVE HERE IS DEFINITLY THE BEST OF ALL THE CABINS WE'VE EVER STAYED IN. (NO OFFENSE MAD DOG!) VERY LITTLE MOUSE DROPPINGS (MAO TZE DONG). FOUND AND DISPOSED OF ONE VERY DEAD AND DESCICATED MOUSE. *POWER WASN'T WORKING BECAUSE THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER SOCKET WAS BADLY CORRODED AND POWER STRIP WAS BROKEN, WE GOT IT WORKING AND ENJOYED THE LIGHTS WHILE EATING OUR HEARTH SIDE DINNER (REPLACED POWER STRIP) CLEANED OUT THE STOVE THIS MORNING. AND CLOSED EVERYTHING BACK UP. LEFT SOME SUPPLIES AND CLEANED OFF SOLAR. NOTICED LOTS OF BIRD ACTIVITY AROUND THE CABIN, INFACT, THERE IS A NEST BEING BUILT IN UNDER THE EAVES OUTSIDE THE PORCH BEHIND THE TAB ROOFING. -SWEET!
IF ANYONE KNOWS MORE ABOUT THE FOUNDER OF THIS CLAIM, FRED MAURER. PLEASE POST UP ON WALL - THANKYOU!

ON LAST DAY OF 3 WEEK ADVENTURE INTO THE HINTERLANDS.

May 6, 2023 - 2nd time staying here - what a gem. So cleanly kept, and enjoyed the fireplace. Hiked down the wash almost to Eureka Valley. Long hike but well worth it to see the geology and mine activity. We couldn't get the power working but were able to hook up our own battery for the lights. Left a duraflame log, the others in the porch area. Looking forward to staying again!
37°F at night, 63°F during the day.

5/15/2023 - Tried to head up to Jackass Flats but were thwarted by a great boulder which has fallen in the road. Decided to revisit the cabin to see how it weathered the flooding from last summer. Happy to find it in great shape!

New Entry - Saturday, February 17.18, 2024 ~ We're 2nd end company. Basecamp was clean but needed some TLC. Current weather conditions low 30's to high to mid 40's plus the wind chill. The beds and wood burner was perfect. The humidity inside reached 50% cuz I left my pot of water on the wood burner. So, we took it off so to sleep cozy. This is a great location to just chill and reset. Look forward coming back soon. Oh before I forget. There is a ghost here @ this cabin. No it was not the American Flag rippling in the wind @ midnight I heard a voices outside, right outside the front door. We got up to check to find nothing

Saturday, February 17/8, 2024 ~ This canyon runs forever. Capt. M decidal to allow (allow) for a holiday routine. Thank the Lord cuz my uniform was dirty from yesterday's hike. I guess I will call my wife on the grapevine phone to let her know that we are stuck @Basecamp. Cool cuz capt is paying me P2 time and PA time. Well goodluck and God bless.
peace out

SAT 9/28/24 - Our second visit this year and we are witness to the slow degradation of the cabin. The window was left open and the cover to the mine left to the side. The outhouse full of rats nests. Attempted to clean but the outhouse wall and door are so warped there is no way to keep the critters out. Will see if we can come up with & fix the next time we are out
