Stone Canyon Cabin Visitor Log (Mar 2002 - Mar 2026)

In early 2026, I visited the Stone Canyon Cabin of the Imlay Mine. There, I found a water-stained register containing a fun history of the folks who had visited since 2002, as well as some of the work that had been done to the cabin after it was adopted. I always like to archive this sort of information, as there's no telling when it will be "borrowed" from the cabin or otherwise meet some untimely demise.

If you've been to the Stone Canyon Cabin, I'd love to hear your story in the comments below, and if you find a transcription error, please let me know!

WELCOME FRIENDS TO THE STONE CABIN....PLEASE DO NOT ENJOY A FIRE HERE.... THE PLACE IS CURRENTLY UNDER RENOVATION AND IS VERY PRONE TO FIRE. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE LUMBER IN THE WASH OR AT THE MILL. WE WILL SOON REPAIR THAT TOO. PLEASE HELP US BY COMPLETING LYGEIA'S ROCK GARDEN. WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE TRAIL LINED A MILE IN EACH DIRECTION. ENJOY YOUR STAY!

People who line trails with stones have WAY to much time on their hands. There used to be lots of backcountry cabins before the BLM burned them...

HARD COLD, HARD TO WRITE!
HIKED HERE FROM BALLARAT SPR ON THE WAY TO SAGE & WARM SPRS & THEN OUT: 10 DAYS. HAVE SEEN A FEW MANY TIMES BEFORE. WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE FRANKIES? NOW THE WIND BLOWS UP FROM [illegible] — VERY COLD WIND ALLOWED — ALMOST SNOWED RIGHT TEPEE + CLOTHES — PUT ROCKS ON TOP TO HOLD DOWN THE ROOFS. TRIED TO SUPPORT THE WINDOWS, BUT THE WIND KEPT BLOWING THINGS OUT. BIG TIME. OH WELL, WHATEVER WORKS.

Adopt-a-Cabbers arrived at 11 AM. Brought two refurbished window panes — 3 guys Dana, BR & H.E. brought back packs for overnight stay. We explored upper Stone Canyon, went over the ridge to the old stage road, [illegible] I surveyed Mine Site #11 — Found 2 minor sets claim notes, took shortcut over a saddle down to bottom of Stone Canyon. Saw an aircraft ammo storage hatch cover, saw a young burro on the ridge. Returned to the cabin at 4:45. Cooked steaks, ate homemade guacamole dip, sardines, salad. 3 guys spent the nite on the newly-covered roofing flat deck. Was a clear, pleasant day, [illegible]. On 20 April left early in the morning — cabin is in great shape — pls respect it. Thx.

Humped door all the way up. Bill S. and Dana lugged up two windows and Rich brought a fire extinguisher and felt tar paper for the section under the old ice box. We installed 2 refurbished windows in the front and re-hung the door, stapled curled sections of the floor felt paper. Ate lunch. A beautiful Saturday between 85 & 90°F, light breeze. I came up here with my friend Rich who loves the desert. I've heard about the cabins for years and wanted to see them. I have come up here expecting not to like the desert, and all my expectations were met. But this part of the desert is no worse than any other part, and probably better than some parts.

Third cabin this week. Spent 1 night at Ashford Canyon mine. Heavy wind. Moved into cave at midnight. Cabin still standing the next morning.

2 nights at Morning Glory camp in Trail Canyon. Hiked up canyon (very rough) to mine and old cabin. Down the road. Now here.

Cabin seems to be going downhill. Most windows out now. But enjoying. Just finished 'Tarzan of the Apes' which I borrowed from Morning Glory. Seems appropriate here, only burros instead of lions.
