Saline Peak Summit Log (Mar 1978 - Jan 2026)

I summited Saline Peak on January 23, 2026 as part of my quest to hit the high point of each of the top 15 mountain ranges in and around Death Valley National Park.

My entry would be the last one to fit in the original summit log, placed by George Barnes during the first recorded climb on March 18, 1973. A second log was already present in the coffee tin, so I added an entry there as well and carefully stowed the original for transport back to camp. These logs - which provide a historic insight - are collected by the NPS as they fill up, and I planned to deliver it to Jeremy (who places many of the new replacement logs) when I had a chance.

Below, I've archived each page of the log for anyone interested. If you have summited Saline Peak, or know someone who has, I'd love to hear your story in the comments!

Sept. 25, 2006 - Luen Miller, Santa Cruz, CA

Walked from a couple of miles north of the Dunes across the Flats to the Saline Range and then mostly down the crest. Easy to see why there are no roads here. No water, no game, (at least nowadays), no minerals. No sign of humans except for arrowheads in the upper passes. Spent the night north of peak, walking back today. Up here in early morning, crystal clear, warm, mountains. all blue.

(cont) everything perfect except for my poor aching knee that has a 12 mile return hike to finish. lumiller@dachell.net LM

Oh my, what beautiful memories you’ve stirred. Steve Smith, the first BLM Ranger, Mike Reynolds’s (isn’t he the Sup now?) and my dear friend Derham Giuliani with whom I spent dozens of days and nights exploring our beloved Saline. He was genius in many ways crossed with a bighorn sheep for climbing and a desert beetle for insight. Thanks you Dan

Happy to have shared a few of those with you Larry! Mike is the superintendent now, and in every interaction I've had with him, a wonderful guy. He's still very active getting out to various peaks and cabins as well; his name - along with Jeremy Stoltzfus - shows up everywhere.

  2. Dennis Richards

Wes Shelburg was an originator of the Desert Peaks Section. He hiked into his older years to just before he passed. He carried full size 7.5 Minute topo maps in a tube on his pack. A true legend. I'm proud to say that I met him.

Re: "10 Dec 96 Dickes & Bud Long, Top of the world, this is!"

These two are Marty Dickes (female) and Tom Budlong.

Marty has worked over the years in various local government and for the Park Service, if my memory is correct.

Tom Budlong was heavily involved in the creation of the Lonesome Miner Trail in the Inyos. He was also heavily involved with the Center for BioDiversity.

Tom, if still alive, would be well into his 90s by now. I don't know Marty's age, but she is likely near 80.

I've been involved with both in my historical researching and exploring efforts during this time period that they posted. I have much more info on both in my notes if you wish. Just email me.

Awesome, thanks Dave, I updated the archive text. I'm always interested to hear more about folks, but I don't want to impose at all.

      • Dave (DAW89446 on the forums)
Dave (DAW89446 on the forums) March 9, 2026

No imposition. I'll go through my research notes and correspondence. Tom and I corresponded a lot during the 1990s until I was doing research into county documents regarding Surprise Canyon patented land and mines and Tom got involved with the Center for BioDiversity, a conflict of interest to say the least.

      • Dave (DAW89446 on the forums)
Dave (DAW89446 on the forums) March 9, 2026

I'll piecemeal additional info as time and circumstances allow.

        The Lonesome Miner Trail
Since starting our Inyo Mountains exploration work in 1989, I had over the years hiked all sections of the imposing Lonesome Miner Trail (LMT). But, I had only done it piecemeal and had only been on some of the sections once. So when BLM "Friends of the Inyo Mountains Wilderness" volunteer Tom Budlong proposed doing it all in one long backpack, I signed on for what would be the second longest backpack I had ever done. This was Tom's second year in a row to do the entire 40-mile LMT straight through. In 1995, he led it north to south in seven days with about 21,000' of gain.

This year, the trip was planned to go from south to north with 17,000'+ of gain. Volunteers Morgan Irby and Marty Dickes signed on to rehike the trail in this directions as they had done the 1995 trip from north to south and along with Brian and Matt Webb and Ron Jones are the only others to have done the entire trail. BLM Ridgecrest Recreation Planner Dave Wash and I also signed on for what ]:knew would be a memorable experience - as it turned out, it was plus a few surprises along the way. The weather forecast did not look good for an extended backpack since there was a major storm passing through and another due to arrive. But as we DSP'ers know, you can never be sure how these storms may materialize in the desert areas.Steve Smith
        16-Nov-96

Note: Steve Smith at this time was an employee with the Ridgecrest office of the BLM. On March 29, 1996 I took Tom Budlong and Steve Smith to Lookout. I was between 4WD vehicles at the time, so rented a Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. It was difficult but it made the trip, though badly pinstriped and a little beat up underneath.

Dave (DAW89446 on the forums) March 9, 2026

        Tom Budlong

        • For over a decade I sent him copies of newspaper articles and county documentation regarding trails, movement of miners and mines across southern Inyo County. Over the years I've visited with him out in the field, my home and elsewhere, and collaborated on other historical and publishing projects.
        • In those years, Tom drove a modified, beige, J60 series Toyota Land Cruiser. I would often spot that truck parked everywhere, generally at the base of a mountain range, between Owens Valley and Death Valley. If I didn't see it parked, I often saw it passing by in the opposite direction. I once found him with a flat tire at Ballarat and helped him change it out.
        • Though Tom was closing in on his senior years, he was a fast hiker. In 1996 he also spent time hiking the Himalayas.
        • In 1997 Tom and Joan Brooks compiled and published the DESERT MAGAZINE SUBJECT INDEX. They enlisted my help. To aid compiling, Tom wrote a basic DOS based computer program, which we all used to database our findings. My name is credited in Tom's notes in the beginning pages of the publication.
        • Tom published an article on Beveridge in the April, 1992 issue of THE ALBUM, TIMES AND TALES OF INYO-MONO.
        • In 1998 Tom hiked the entire Skidoo water pipeline starting at the top.
        • Beginning in 1999 and extending into 2000, I was hired by a group of land and mine owners at Panamint City and Surprise Canyon to look up records of their claims, properties and the history of the road up the canyon. The Center for Biological Diversity was preparing to sue the BLM and shut down the road. At the time, the road was still on Inyo County books and owners were paying taxes. That is when I found that Tom was involved with the CBD, so I quietly withdrew from further contact with him. I didn't want a conflict, a conflict of interest, nor did I have a good opinion of CBD.

        Marty Dickes

        • I've not had any professional contact with her, but did meet her on occasion.
        • She came to my attention regarding involvement with an accident in the southern Sierra Nevada.
        • Tom and her often hiked together.
        • She was working for the Forest Service out of Bishop on June 11, 1995 when the Spark Plug Mine (White Mountains) was dedicated by ASM International for its contribution to the industrial field. I was invited by the Forest Service to attend, and I wrote an article with photographs for the INYO REGISTER newspaper of Bishop. She was in attendance as well.
        • In 1995 she was doing inventory work of roads in the White Mountains and Inyo Range, for proposed Wilderness.
        • I mentioned in my notes of 1998 that Marty was living in Trona. She was doing boundary survey work for the Argus Range Wilderness. At times I would see Tom's Land Cruiser parked at her house on my way to and from work at the plants in Trona.
