Emmett's Lone Tree Cabin Visitor Log (Mar 1994 - Apr 2026)

In early 2026, we visited Emmett's Lone Tree Cabin on the Alta Mine. I always like to archive this sort of information, as there's no telling when it will be "borrowed" from the cabin or otherwise meet some untimely demise.

I will transcribe as I have time, likely using some sort of OCR for the bulk of the work. As such, I'm sure there will be errors; please contact me if you find something that needs correcting.

If you've been to the this Cabin, I'd love to hear your story in the comments below.

AUG 23 - 85
I [illegible] going to take the rest of the notes from the log down town to be transfered to a lange log book.

We have run out of paper here. & will bring back a new book and copies of the previous logs dated back to 1955.

Frank, Trampas and Jim Bertrand are with me this mounth to help with the anual work. They have fixed the roads up pretty good. The weather is perfect for this time of year.

Thanks to all the good people that have taken care of this camp. See you on the trail

What a place! It's really sad having to leave such "days" and such a sweet little cabin (especially now that it looks so nice and tidy) — it was snowing the first night we got here, (three days ago) and since then I had the chance of seeing how a full moon and some of the biggest stars look like up here.

We spent almost all our time cleaning, fixing, laughing and contemplating and I'm sure [scribble] I'm going to start missing all this the very moment the road becomes black & human.

I miss it already, actually!

It's been more than a pleasure looking after this little corner and I really hope that who [smiley] comes here next will behave in a civilised way. Please!

Whoever was here before us was what I call a "Desert Pig". The cabin was really messed up and it makes you feel sad knowing that there's people that still don't understand the importance of places like this.

Anyway we got up here because Butte Valley looked like Disney Land on a Sunday afternoon, and I'm very glad to see that Emmet it's not well known yet. So let's keep this a secret between us.

Please take care of the place and enjoy it like we did.

Thank you Emmet and thank you Wild Bill
Mad Max

3/31/94 Got back with tons of stuff for the cabin. I hope they will be useful to you and help you enjoy Emmets a bit better. No mice. The place is finally clean.

4/3/94 Thanks for the clean-up, Max. Fred, Jenny and I have been wandering around for several days - down Redlands to the falls (nice spring), up the Manly-Rogers route to Rogers pass. Always a wonderment hereabouts. Can always find lots of reasons to come back,

4-17-95 Senior Field Geology - Sonoma State

Yesterday we were treated to a snow storm on Easter Sunday. It was fabulous. I would like to spend more time here in the future.

Our mapping project of the area ends tomorrow. We have found no evidence for an unconformity between the South Park member of the Kingston Peak Fm. and the Noonday Dolomite, but we may have found Archaeocyathids in the Noonday Dolomite, which would totally alter the pre Cambrian - Cambrian boundary. This would be exciting as a geological find. Thanks for such a serene cabin sight, and good luck with any prospecting.

Ron & I came in our Bronco 4x4 up here for the first time. I have been to Death Valley many times — each visit is so different from the last.

Your cabin was a welcome site and we spent two nights here, entertained by reading the logs.

Yesterday we hiked part-way up Manly Peak & drove down & back from Redlands Canyon. Saw my first big horn sheep there. We're still looking for your mine (well hidden!)

Note for stove users — gusts of wind drove the smoke down the chimney, filling the cabin w/ smoke. Completely cleaned it out, but it happened again. Maybe we're using it wrong?? FYI

We left a Bible to add to your library. God Bless,

Emmett & Ruth here, doing some much needed work, Installed new stove, did some roof work. Next trip I think we need to bring new broom. The weather is perfect, sunny & warm with a light breeze. Have seen chuckers, rabbits, birds and moths at night. Remarkable! Haven't seen any burros this trip, guess the steady traffic sent them to higher ground. Have never seen so many people in D.V. Notice of intent to hold are up to date - all fees paid. Will be back shortly to finish mine work & clean up trash.

Hard rainstorms all night with gale-force winds. Rain let up for an hour but now at 7 am it is raining hard again - winds still whipping. Cozy inside with the little stove.
It was beautiful yesterday as we drove up the canyon with [strikethrough: snow] covering the peaks. We were hoping to see more snow but this morning the clouds are low over the peaks. We were here working on an interesting project with a Scientific group and police officers. Gorgeous weather for what we were doing until late yesterday. The rest of the party returned home via Goler Wash. We visited Russell's Cabin (in good shape) & Todd's cabin (also in good shape). We wanted to do some work at our cabin so bid farewell to the others.
Since rainy weather seems to be here for a while we decided to head home via Warm Springs Canyon. Departing about 9 am. We'll be back in a short time.

Emmett & Ruth arrived about 4:30 pm. Had a leisurely trip leaving Devore home at 8:30 am. Said our Hi to everyone in Shoshone, then on to Death Valley Junction. Had a great visit with everyone there and met Theresa Cantwell the new owner of the Amargosa Cafe. Had a piece of wonderful pie. Yum! Did a lot of cleanup in cabin. Emmett took gas stove out & gave it a good cleaning so we were able to use it again. Had a light dinner & to bed at 9:00 pm.

6-17-09 Wed. Emmett up at crack of dawn, I wasn't far behind. Got the new screen in window, cleaned & repaired glass window. What a view now. Doing more cleaning & repairing. It is a gorgeous day. 8:30 am 73°, getting warmer, had a couple of brief surprise showers about noon. Got cool but has warmed up again by 2:00. At 3:30 it is 83°. Emmett has been really busy — has put up a "temporary" comfort station, since the wind evidently blew the other one down. We put up out of the way.

6-18-09 Thurs. Emmett, as usual, was up as soon as there was a little light in camp - 5:00am. Temp 55°. Going to be another beautiful day. We had a colorful umbrella set up across from cabin, the hummingbirds were buzzing around it - very confused at not being able to find any nectars.
I was surprised to find these colorful little birds way up here, I can't recall ever seeing them up here before. 6:30 now & Temp is 63° so it is going to warm up pretty fast. 9:30-71°. 3:30-87°. Starting to cool down nicely by 6:00.

6-19-09 - Fri. - Up at 5:00, packing up to head out. If Mengel Pass is not too bad we'll go that way & out Panamint Valley. Got a lot accomplished. Will be back ASAP to do more fix-ups. It is now 6:30am & 70°.
Visitors are welcome to use & enjoy the camp. Please help us keep it clean. Be sure cupboard doors are securely fastened, windows closed and door securely fastened.

11/25/09
So our story begins on wingate road. We make the turn towards mengal pass in a 1968 Jeep M715. We start drinking heavily about 1/2 of the way up. Turns out this was a bad idea considering we were on the pass at night. We scraped the front differential on a rock. When I checked on it, it was pouring diff fluid. Some quick thinking by the driver repaired wit a few good wacks from the mini sledge. Covered in gear oil, we continue to geoligists cabin.

[Left page: blank]

Geoligist's cabin is taken, stella's is taken, russel's is taken. We're tired, dirty, a little drunk still and just want to sleep. We go to russel's knowing that it has extra rooms. We park the truck and are greeted by the occupants dog (which they sent out to us). I make friends with the dog. At this point a woman emerges from the center room. She seems nice enough, allows us to stay in a room next to her and returns to bed. We set up shop, bring the two 12 gauges inside (you never know who you're going to bump into in the desert). We chat, sleep, wake up, make coffee, and chat with the occupants. We make small talk, she claims " I heard everything you guys said 'last night'" as if it is somehow significant. She then immediately

[left page blank]

requests "when are you leaving?". We took the hint from the greedy, in-hospitable individuals, packed up and left immediately. We went to Stella's in hopes of meeting some more generous people. We were met at the gate by an older gentleman who essentially told us to fuck off. Onto geologists. No greeting. Wouldn't even open the door. On down the trail and bump into the first nice group since we got here. They direct us here, we make camp, and head over to their camp to share our beer and whiskey. We return here to emmit's and build a coal base to cook our thanksgiving steaks on. During this process we see headlights down the road. Fully prepared to offer our visitor's a beer

[blank page]

instead, we are greeted by two park rangers with M16's telling us "keep your hands where we can see them, we know you're armed!!" We comply. We're searched, questioned, and had our weapons confiscated. Apparently, the people who sent their dog out at us, called the rangers and claimed (and I'm quoting the ranger) "two punks with shotguns were threatening us!!". The rangers aren't stupid. They spoke with us a short while and determined we were telling the truth. We were given a small fine and now have to pick up our guns in Furnace Creek. Big fuckin whoop. Happy thanksgiving to us. I wish there were more generous people in the desert who don't believe that

[left page blank]

wilderness belongs to them simply because they arrived there first. I love this place and any traveler who happens across my trail is welcome to all that I have.

So we dirt camped down the trail always. It was windy, cold and rained heavily that night & morning. I wish I wasn't a nice guy and let some body pass us. We would have been inside at Stella's and would have offered shelter to the jeepers.

I feel for you. "One disappointed man" 11/25/09

Anyway, after a cold and wet nite, we packed up and went looking for a sheltered canyon to camp in, looking like we were near the end of a windy, cold canyon. Around the corner was this place. Badly needed shelter. Thank you Emmet. Plan to spend a few days. [smiley]

Cabin's a bit of a mess, but otherwise not in too bad of shape.
For those thinking of cleaning it - take note: Hanta Virus has been positively identified in both deer and cactus mice in Death Valley N. Park. Anything short of gloves, face mask and bleach is taking a risk!

Nov 23, 2010: Our third trip in to Butte Valley & first time 'up' from west side Goler Wash. The usual cabins in the area were already occupied — Russell's, Stella's & the Geologist Cabin so we thought we would see if we could locate 'Emmett's' Cabin which we had learned about from These Canyons are Full of Ghost & had a vague idea of the general direction. Pretty happy at locating this excellent cabin although we decided to camp in our tent pitched just outside the cabin due to the lateness of the day & some concern about hanta-virus & rodent turds since it appears that the cabin is in need of bit of cleaning - cold weather continues here - we had some snow last Saturday nite over at Nelson Cabin.

Emmett,
These canyons are surely full of ghosts, can't believe I finally found the place. I may have hell to pay tomorrow as I'm running low on gas in my motorcycle... God help me.

Been out in DV for 4 days now and found this cabin by chance. Everything was covered in dead moths, never seen so many dead moths in one place, so me and my buddy Brian cleaned it up, and crashed here for our last night of the trip. Been real cold and rainy almost non-stop the entire trip; it's really nice to find a place that has such an efficient wood burning stove. We donated our remaining wood supply for the cause, the pieces are too large for the stove, but if you chop them up into kindling it works great. Can't wait to get home and get a copy of Mr. Emmet's book, "These Canyons are full of Ghosts", sounds like everyone really approves of it. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Harder for allowing this place to be used as a shelter for all the death valley explorers.

4-15-11 Went up Gold Hill Road (5 mi west of Warm Springs Camp) (found Indian chip cave) 1 mi in from Gold Hill Road & Warm Springs Road junction. Arrived here around 4. Brought my grandson Jeremiah (ex marine, thanks for serving), Ed and Sam, to show them Kynes Retreat. Great weather. A jeep club and 4 single rigs came up to see this place. Had a nice camp fire.

4-16-11 Can't drive down Redlands any more. Hike to Kynes base camp (steel rod & old pack box taken by someone?) We hiked the 1.5 miles down to base camp then up to Kynes Retreat. Great views, trail is still in good shape for the most part. Trail starts across from base camp. We dropped off 19gal H2O by base camp (glad we did.) Came back rested. Leaving Sunday. Thanks soooo much for the use of your place!

1-03-2020 Wondering why there are no entries since May of 2019, 1st time back to Striped Butte Valley since 2007. Read Emmett's book soon after that, but had no idea his cabin was up here, so a fun surprise, especially given that his book has been riding around with me in my car for 10 years! Cabin isn't that welcoming. Emmett was obviously here fall of 2018, but it may be that he is no longer able to get up here as often, if at all. — Stew Gipson Sac, CA

2/14/21
It's my 3rd night here. I can't believe that I let ten years pass since I was here last.
Here alone on my motorcycle again. It's a busy Pres. Day weekend, so I came straight to Emmett's from Isleton, CA. 4pm now and getting cold, so I just lit the fire. Best stove for miles around.
Cold nights and nice days. Friday night was mousy free! [smiley]
Last night I caught and killed 3 mice in the little cage trap. They can't resist a dried apricot. The trick is to turn the trap over on it's top. Then when they enter they drop down and have a harder time getting out. This gives you time to grab the trap and stab the little bastards with a six inch spike.
I found the mine yesterday, but didn't enter since I'm alower. Today I found the powder room. Quite a large room, Emmett must have a thing for safety.

[continuation entry]
What a treat to have a full propane tank to cook with! I'll leave my little propane bottle in the cupboard with some canned goods I didn't need.

Things were clean enough when I got here. I brought a dust mask so I can clean when I leave.

It's 5am on 2/15/21. Water on the stove for coffee and bacon cooking on the woodstove.

No mice last night!!! [smiley] I must have killed the locals!

I had just turned 40 the last time I was here and am 50 now. I had better make it back before I'm 60. Thanks for a lonely box to hold me,

Wonderhussy rolling solo, exploring the beautiful Butte Valley! Extreme wind advisory in the park today, so took shelter in this cozy little cabin. Made some hot cocoa, read the stories from past visitors in the log books, then went on my way. Beautiful spot; long may it last!

Russ: 04/27/22 came up to see the stone cabin and striped butte. It had been taken, found this place instead. Glad, I did! Got some cool photos of the rusted old bus at night. Will come back when its not so dang hot!! OH, and btw, how in the f*** did somebody get that bus up here---- lol

FOUND THE TRAIL ON THE MAP, CHECKED IT AGAINST GOOGLE EARTH, AND LO AND BEHOLD THERE IS INDEED A SHACK! KNEW I SHOULD HAVE TRUSTED MY GUT AND STAYED HERE INSTEAD OF GEOLOGIST — OH WELL, NEXT TIME! LOVE THE SOLITUDE HERE — WAY BETTER THAN GEOLOGIST. I DO HAVE TO ASK — HOW THE HELL DID EMMETT GET SO FAR INTO THIS HILL WITHOUT IT COLLAPSING?? THE HOST ROCK IS AS ROTTEN AS ANYTHING — I COULD (AND DID) LITERALLY PULL THAT HILL APART WITH MY BARE FINGERS!
