We summited Striped Butte on April 17, 2026 as part of a three-day trip to Butte Valley. It was the first time we've spent any material time in the valley, even though it's the home of my favorite camp site in the entirety of Death Valley.

Slowly targeting the butte, the red v[an?] [we?] made quick ti[me] to the target drop and walk, all the while a qu[iet?] in the bed of the rocks. Side trip to the mines, open faced into the divun wind, the three explorers faced into the [illegible] luminously transforming it's spectral energy into pricklines that lurks in the soft illusory closes. When they realized the turn of events, He said: "Listen here you mother fucker, give us your water and cliff bars and we won't unload this truck full of bullets on you." I opened my eyes, and it was all a dream. Just slopes, mounds, spikes, and sun.
BUT THEN THE REMINDER OF THE WIND WITH A TWINKLE & A SNORT TOLD THEM TO SKIP & BREATH & KEEP EYES OPEN...

I am now almost 11 years old and come and live from in Germany. In germany you mostly get green woods and cloudy days. So this dry part of world is a complete change. My Dad and I are staying in the Geologists cabin (i have no idea if i spelld that right) and a have made are way up here. We are leaving tomorrow. It what [crossed out] a memorable stay.

- NAU geologists climb this butte for the third time. Good view for a short hike. Two days of field work left. We have been measuring the layers of Pennsylvanian-Permian ocean dirt, which composes this butte.

- Nina is also the doggo with us. The rangers don't need to know. Plus Tramp has shut down the government so how would the rangers know. Regardless, dogs that make less of an impact than humans should be allowed to hike these beautiful places. The law is unfair.

Awesome father-daughter trip & couldn't ask for more beautiful weather. My old man sure gave me his love for Death Valley, the desert, & the great out-doors!

Seven of us staying in Russells Camp - walked up the Butte in 45 mins. Beautiful, clear, and cool. Spending 4 days out here and apart from one bicycle tourer, haven't seen a soul. Bunch of [donkeys crossed out] "burros" though, and they all look good and healthy. We'll be back. - Michael, Jeff, Roger, Leo, Max, Nate, Chris.

Got a sweet black friday deal on this summit of the Butte! Just cost a bit of shoveling the icy packed snow off the east side of Mengel. Second time up here, first with snow, beautiful!

Three motorcycles made the journey into this valley from Ballarat. The geologist cabin was occupied so we stayed at Stellas cabin. Was a great cabin with fire pit accomodations. Snow on the ground and cold at night, but nothing whiskey can't handle?! Donde esta Brian Cancimilla?!

Our second summit of the Butte. Just keeps getting more beautiful, snow capped mountains especially. Staying at Russels 2 nights. Burro & Joey made the trip this time, just not the hike. On break after my first semester of my PhD program at UMass Amherst (in Amherst, Massachusetts). More than happy I could make it back here before returning to Mass. My old man is the best.
Here with one of my favorite people in the world, and the best daughter anyone could ever ask for.

Hiked here at 10:30 AM with my 8 year old daughter Brooklyn. This is our 3rd DV trip. We started in Alabama Hills, then Warm Springs, Eureka Dunes, Gold Point, Bob N Wards, Warm Springs Resort Hot Springs, then Russell's cabin last night. Headed into Saline Valley later. This has been a great trip just the two of us. We are very blessed to be able to come here and enjoy this place together.

Made it to the top around 5:45, trying to escape a little of the heat. We struggled a little, at first, to find a decent trail to ascend but eventually ran into a confident series of switchbacks. We were delighted to find this notebook at the top & have enjoyed perusing all the entries. We are especially fans of Nina the Illegal Beagle! The views from up here, with the sloping shadows of Manly Peak & a pleasant, persuasive wind, convince us to stay a little longer to soak in this empty but nourishing place. Thank you for sharing this special place, across many months & years & generations.

12/24/2021 — Trying to live my best life and this view is helping. The Geologist Cabin is the perfect spot to hide from the rain that seems to want to make it clear it is winter in DEVA. Hope still this sunny part of the day holds until I get back. The clouds creeping over Manly Peak are dark even though it's only 11am. Glad to climb this butte, second time here and didn't get to climb it last time.

Nick, Kyle, Landon, Nate enjoyed a nice camp at the base of striped butte. I went to bed too early, like normal. For Nate and I, it is our second trip up to the top. We came over the escape trail from Trona, then made it to the turnoff to geologists cabin from the bottom of goler wash in about 50 min (Landon was driving he stole his jeep). We will head out warm springs road and find somewhere to make camp between here and Baker.
Lots of people in butte valley, but it was still great to make it out here with a good group of people.

2-18-24 Epic Feb day. Warm, breezy, not a sign of a pending cloud. Stayed too warm and dry in the Honeymoon Suite at Russell sleeping out a crazy wind & rain storm. Finally summiting this amazing butte is a bucket list after all the many times of just driving by off to explore more.

We travelled to Striped Butte via Mengel Pass in our 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser. Wanted to celebrate my 52nd birthday in Death Valley, this magical and desolate land filled with so much life and so vastly different than life in Santa Cruz. It's snowy and cool up here and all the clouds we had last few days in Trona and Carrizo have now moved on. Were expecting the days to warm up into the 80s but it still feels like Spring to me.

Wrapped up our stay at the cabin early this morn after spending a couple days working Redlands Canyon Rd & Wood Canyon Rd. Concluding our detail we head back to Big Bend tomorrow - Grateful to have had the opportunity to explore Butte Valley, lots of cool cactus like the silver cholla and hedgehog cactus. After some moderate rain the first day the skies are clear and bright. Hope the ride back goes well.

Welp, I made it to the top, just to write on this log! Myself, Han, Sean, Maddie, and Beckett hiked up here before heading back home to Texas. I can say this park is really cool, and I would definitely try to visit again. There's also white butterfly's here, that means angels are around! From your fellow Texas trail dog, I might just have to come back to explore even more of this gem!

Early celebration to the end of our two week detail helping the park fix impassable 4x4 roads from the recent floods. Stayed at the geologist cabin for three nights but heading out today. Really enjoyed our nightly flag ceramony [sic] which definitely followed proper decorum. All in all its been a great stay and I definitely want to visit again. So happy to have shared this experience with a really awesome crew.

Followed Digonnet's route up the south ridge, even though it seemed crazy before we arrived. It was FANTASTIC! What a great way to cap 3 days in Butte Valley!
